In conversation with R, I used this phrase: "Let the devil take the hindmost.".

He stared at me and said he'd never heard it before. Of course, the meaning is intuitively obvious. I couldn't believe he'd never heard me say it before, because we've been married 23 years, but I suppose I'd never had occasion. I learned it at my mother's knee. She's very expressive.

One would think that after 23 years of living with eachothers , You've probably heard eachothers say every single phrase in the english language even the ones you've never used . LoL

You'd think so, wouldn't you? My mom still surprises me from time to time. One day I asked her if it had rained hard at her house and she told me they'd had a frog-strangling gullywasher. I laughed my head off.

I get that with Mrs Soldier - she has lots of expressions from Northern Ireland - I know most of them by now but she still surprises me occasionally.

Mama, I thought you would be proud to know that I almost used that phrase tonight in my Luther essay. It would have been something along the lines of how he tried to save the Catholic church, but eventually gave up, started his own church, and let the devil take the hindmost. But I don't think Velek would exactly flip his skirt over that, so I left it out.
